UTC's Brown, Boaz Win Flight B Doubles At Mercer

  • Sunday, September 14, 2014

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team returns from Mercer with some hardware after this weekend’s action.  UTC’s sophomore duo of Derek Brown and Austin Boaz won the Flight B doubles tournament.

Brown and Boaz lived up to their No. 1 seed in the draw with a win in the finals today.  They defeated Georgia College’s Pedro Ecenarro and Mattia Campus 8-6.

“The Mocs had a good day today,” stated head coach Carlos Garcia.  “We had a lot of guys in the finals and Derek and Austin came out with a great win.  We hope to build on our results this weekend and get ready for the Baras Tournament at the Champions Club on Oct. 3.”

Boaz also competed in the Flight C singles finals.  He lost to Georgia Southern’s Robbie Thompson (6-2, 7-5) in straight sets.

Junior Nick Wingord was the other Moc competing in a main draw final.  He lost to Ecenarro in the Flight B singles.  He was playing well, up a set and leading the second, before his legs locked up with cramps.  He dropped the match (6-7 (5), 3-4 (ret.)).

Junior John Peacey and sophomore Nic Wilson defeated Georgia College’s Anton Waern and Kyle Kinsler 8-3 to take third place in the doubles Flight A.  Junior Luke Saunders finished third in the Flight B singles with a win over Georgia Southern’s Christian Kerrigan (7-5, 6-0).

Up next for the Mocs is the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic on Oct. 3-5.  Action takes place at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
