Lee Second At Montevallo Invitational

  • Monday, September 15, 2014
Lee University junior Taylor Davis posted a 4-under 67 and is in second place of the medalist competition while the Lee team (383) also holds down the No. 2 spot after the opening round of the Montevallo (University) Invitational at the Timberline Golf Club.

It is first tournament of the fall season for the men of coach John Maupin. "Overall this was a solid first round for our team," said the coach. We can pull a lot of positives from it.  I thought the guys executed really well from tee to green.
We just didn't get many putts to fall today.

West Georgia fired an impressive 6-under 278 to garner the first round lead. The Flames turned in a solid 1-under total. Host Montevallo is third (284). North Georgia holds down the fourth spot (291, and Montevallo rounds out the top five in the eight-team field (292).

"We've put ourselves in good position and I think we can get more out of our round tomorrow," added Maupin. "Taylor played a great round today.  He kept his composure and did a nice job of getting lost in what he was doing instead of focusing on results.  He has the ability to shoot some low rounds for us."

West Georgia's Kevin Clarke (66) holds a one-stroke lead in the medalist hunt. Davis is second, followed by North Georgia's Austin Booker 68. Catawba's Brian Donaldson and Montevallo's Dalton Skinner are tied for fourth.

Lee's Peyton Sliger is tied for eighth after an even-par round of 71. Ryne Thompson is tied for 14th after firing a 1-over 72. Matt Strube (73) had the other round that counted for the Flames on Monday and Adam Wright pitched in with a 75.
