The Benton Police Department has been awarded a total of $48,399.96 in grants from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. Benton Police Chief Rocky King said the funds will be used to support the mission of Governor Haslam, Rep. Howell and the Benton Police Department to save lives and reduce injuries on Tennessee roadways.

A grant of $27,900 will be set aside for alcohol enforcement and to combat impaired driving. $15,499.96 is earmarked to support a Police Department Network coordinator in the area of traffic services. $5,000 will be used for high visibility traffic enforcement.

Benton Mayor Jerry Stephens said “I want to thank Rep. Howell and Governor Haslam for their help in making the streets and highways in Benton as safe as possible. These grants will be put to good use.”

“Having safe roads is critical to our mission of making Benton and the rest of District 22 a better place to live, work and raise a family,” Rep. Howell said. “I am pleased that the GHSO sees the need to help our rural communities.”

A total of 449 GHSO grants were awarded state-wide for 2014-2015 funding cycle.
