Covenant College Theatre Department Presents “Returning Home”

  • Wednesday, March 18, 2015
Covenant College announced they will put on their first ever completely self-produced show. Writers from all across the college’s campus submitted plays and ten have been chosen to be performed. "A group of enthusiastic directors spearheads the endeavor to take these tales off the page and put them on the stage. Touching stories and hilarious parodies have been created to give many facets to this collection of shows. Over 50 students, faculty, and staff are involved in the process of bringing this about, ensuring that the production will come from the very heart of the community at Covenant College," officials said.

Senior Nina Brock is producing the show as her senior project.
When asked for her thoughts about the enterprise, she stated, “I am super excited to have the opportunity to produce Covenant College’s first ever New Play Festival.  I took on this project as my SIP after Professor Kirby explained to me what a fun, creative and innovative process it would be considering Covenant has yet to do anything like it. It’s been a great opportunity to learn more about the business side of putting on a show. I’ve grown a new appreciation for the amount of work it takes to perform a good production.  We have so many talented people in this production. The theme of ‘Returning Home’ has delivered a variety of ideas and styles from each of the writers and I look forward to witnessing each of these plays being brought to life. I can honestly say that the festival will be a truly exciting experience, where you will leave ultimately questioning what home really means to you.”

Matthew Mindeman is a sophomore who is directing one of the shows in the festival. When asked about the experience he said, “Directing a brand new play is actually really exciting. There is a great energy surrounding this whole festival knowing that there will be ten premiere productions starting on the 16th. I've really enjoyed being able to collaborate with the playwright himself to be able to understand what his vision for the play is. It's been a great benefit. There is also a great camaraderie between all the directors. We are all trying to help each other out to make each other's plays as good as possible. It makes for a wonderful atmosphere to work in.”

The Ten-Minute-Play Festival will be performing for one weekend only. The show opens for performances on April 16 at 8 p.m. and will run April 17 at 8 p.m. and April 18 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $3 for students, staff, and seniors.
