Baylor senior co-captains Chad Woodham and Jack Gray have made commitments play college tennis next year at Austin Peay and Sewanee, respectively.
Gray, who holds a 4.06 and has not made a letter grade below an A since the eighth grade, had decided to not play college tennis until Sewanee came calling.
"Sewanee coach John Shackelford showed a lot in interest in me and I felt they wanted me to be part of the tennis program," said Gray. "I felt at home there when I was on my visit."
Baylor-Sewanee Tennis Connection: Alex Guerry Jr. was valedictorian at Baylor and Sewanee and SEC semifinalist in the late 1930s. Guerry's nephew, Pat Guerry, was a four-time All-American (1986-89) and in recent years Baylor alums playing for the Tigers have been Alex Cooper, Eric Roddy (current junior) and Maggie Crumbliss (current freshman).
The Guerry family was instrumental in the construction of Sewanee’s John P. Guerry Tennis Pavilion a decade ago and the refurbishment of the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center.
Woodham, who has a 3.65 GPA and plans to major in finance, made early decision in the fall.
"The campus is a good fit for me and the players on the tennis team made me feel welcome when I visited the school," said Woodham whose dad, Bart, played basketball and football at East Ridge and his grandfather, Ed Woodham, helped lead the Pioneers to state wrestling titles in the 1960s.
"Jack and Chad are our senior captains and they set the tone for the rest of the team," said Baylor coach Philip Johnson. "I feel they will make good contributions to the Sewanee and Austin Peay tennis programs."
