Chattanooga Trucking Firm Facing Multiple Lawsuits After Nursing Students Killed In South Georgia

  • Friday, May 15, 2015

Chattanooga-based US Xpress is facing multiple lawsuits after the wreck in South Georgia in which five nursing students were killed.

The truck involved was an 18-wheeler operated by Total Transportation of Mississippi and owned by parent company US Xpress.

The tragic accident happened April 22 on I-16 eastbound in Bryan County, Ga.

The suits say that at approximately 5:50 a.m., an 18-wheeler operated by John Wayne Johnson of Total Transportation ran into the rear of seven stopped vehicles in the right lane.

The complaints say Johnson made no attempt to stop before hitting the first vehicle at more than 70 mph.

In addition to the five deaths, others suffered serious injuries.

The lawsuits say the truck was equipped with a warning system designed to prevent such rear-end crashes.
