The Cleveland City School Board on Monday approved a proposal for an alternative education plan for students who may be behind and need extra credits.

School Director Martin Ringstaff proposed this alternative education plan and gave seven recommendations for the plan.

The plan is to create a new, stand-alone facility for these students to catch up on their credits in order to graduate from high school.

The program right now is called the Teen Learning Center but the board recommended a change in this name for the new facility.

The board approved the idea and gave Mr.

Ringstaff the go ahead to turn in the application for the project on June 1.

The board was also briefed on the progress of the new Cleveland Raiders Basketball Arena.

The arena opening date has been pushed back due to the rain throughout the month of April.

“The substantial completion date is actually pushed back. The April meeting I reported we were about mid January based upon the weather days that they could claim,” Brian Templeton, firm principal of Upland Design Group, said.

After renegotiating the contract because of the rain, the scheduled date to open is Feb. 26.

“Talking with (the contractors) that doesn’t mean it is going to take that long, that’s just the allowable time before they’re penalized,” Mr. Templeton said.

The board also approved the Community Eligibility Program for the next three years, which gives students the ability to have free or reduced meals from the schools.

The board retreat is June 8.
