Students will have several new options this fall to speed up their progress toward a degree and increase academic success at Chattanooga State. All students are required to take general education courses and can enroll in several “course pairings” this fall designed to accelerate their completion rate. Students who enroll in any of the following course pairings will be able to override the prerequisite restrictions and take the courses at the same time during one semester instead of the usual two.
Officials said, "The Social and Behavioral Sciences Division has developed three general education course pairings. PSYC-1030 (General Psychology) and PSYC-2130 (Lifespan Development) is especially helpful to students wanting to get into nursing who need both classes while HIST-2010 (U.S. History I) and HIST-2020 (U.S. History II) is great for AS and AA transfer degrees since both sections of history are required. Students who are sociology majors, social work and human service majors will appreciate the pairing of SOCI-1010 (Introduction to Sociology) with SOCI-1020 (Social Problems).
"Each class is seven weeks in length. When paired with its complementary class, both classes can be completed during the 15-week semester. According to Dean John Haworth, the psychology and sociology classes are taught online while history classes will be offered on Tuesday evenings.
The Humanities Department has aligned their course pairings a little bit differently to provide students with unique opportunities. ENGL-1010 (Composition I) and SPCH-1010 (Fundamentals of Speech Communication), two classes required by virtually every program on campus, will help students establish a firm foundation in oral and written communication while bypassing the traditional prerequisite hurdle. ENGL-1020 (Composition II) and ENGL-2110 (American Literature to 1855) will allow students a chance to pair two required general education classes. As a bonus, students will be exposed to the Humanities Department’s award-winning Writers@Work curriculum. The final pairing of SPAN-1010 (Elementary Spanish I) and ENGL-1010 (Composition I) will provide students with an innovative bilingual focus on oral and written communication – a plus in today’s increasingly global workplace.
Unlike the SBSC course pairings, those in the Humanities Department will run on a traditional 15-week schedule. The ENGL-1010/SPCH-1010 and the ENGL-1020/ENGL-2110 pairings will employ a hybrid format, allowing students to take two classes during one class time slot, while the ENGL-1010/SPAN-1010 pairing will operate as a cohort using two consecutive class periods."
