While many will flock to the 25th annual Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival this weekend at the Hiwassee Refuge, residents of Morning Pointe of Chattanooga at Shallowford got a head start.
The assisted living residents journeyed out to Birchwood, Tn., to view the Sandhill Cranes. The Hiwassee Refuge Observation Platform was the perfect spot. They spotted hundreds of the cranes. Some were flying overhead, some down below, just at the river’s edge and a few resting in the open field, right before them. A few residents braved the cold to get a better sighting of the birds from the observation area. The journey was well worth it.
The Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival will be held Jan. 16-17 at the Hiwassee Refuge and at the Birchwood Community Center. If you miss the festival, make sure you take a trip out soon. While cranes may stay until February, peak numbers of cranes occur in January and you will have a better chance to see them.
