Lee University will welcome best-selling author and international speaker Cecil Murphey to Cleveland for a community event being held at the Cleveland Public Library on Friday, Nov. 4, from 1:30–2:30 p.m.  Mr. Murphey’s presentation, “A Peek Into a Writer’s Method: How I Decided to Write ‘90 Minutes,’” will be followed by a book signing.

“90 Minutes in Heaven,” which tells the story of Don Piper, has sold more than seven million copies and required several follow-up books. Staying on the New York Times’ best-seller list for more than five years and being included on the USA Today’s list of the top 150 best-selling books over the past 15 years, makes the book one of Mr. Murphey’s most successful.

Mr. Murphey has authored and co-authored over 135 books. His books have sold millions and have been translated into over 40 languages. In addition to “90 Minutes,” “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” (with Dr. Ben Carson) and “Rebel With a Cause” (with Franklin Graham) are other well-known titles.

He has been awarded numerous honors over his career including the Extraordinary Service Award, Silver Angel Award, Retailers Choice Award, and Foreword Book of the Year Bronze Award, among others. Two of his best sellers, “90 Minutes in Heaven” and “Gifted Hands” were made into feature-films.

Along with writing, Mr. Murphey travels to speak on topics close to his heart such as writing, spiritual and personal growth, healthy living, and healing from abuse. Before pursuing writing full-time, Mr. Murphey served as a pastor, a hospital chaplain and a missionary in Kenya.

Mr. Murphey strives to help other writers succeed and mentors many younger authors. When he is not busy writing eight hours a day, the active 83-year-old spends time with his wife Shirley, longs for Kenya, goes on adventures and runs every day.

The event is free and open to the public, though seating will be limited.
