Eugene Hartsfield, 84, died on Thursday, September 29, 2016 after a brief illness. 

He was born April 18, 1932 in Chattanooga.

He was a lifelong member of Phillips Temple CME Church, where he served on the Steward and Trustee Boards. He was a graduate of Howard High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. 

Having had a love for serving others in their time of need, Gene developed a love for the funeral service business at a very young age when he began to work at Buchanan Funeral Home. He later was employed at Franklin- Strickland Funeral Home and John P. Franklin Funeral Home. He was also employed and later retired from Cutters Laboratory.

He was a dedicated, long time member of the Armistice Lodge #440 of the I.B.P.O.E.W. There he served as the past Assistant State Director of the Beauty and Talent Department and was a member of the Antler Guard.  He was also a member of the Hyksos Temple No. 123 of the Prince Hall Shriners, where he was a member of the initial Marching Unit.

He was prceded in death by his wife, Charlie “Ann” Monaugan Hartsfield; parents, Elias and Frankie Hartsfield; his twin sister, Betty Jean Hartsfield Smith; sisters, Mary Hartsfield Smith, Ethel Mae Hartsfield Christian, and Frankie Hartsfield Bridgeman; and one brother, Isaiah Hartsfield.

He is survived by five children, Todd Anthony (Rejeana) Lowery, William Elias (Karitsa) Jones, both of Chattanooga, and Eugene Anthony Hartsfield of Atlanta; Sonya Petty and LaSonya Hartsfield, both of Chattanooga; three sisters: Ernestine Hartsfield Bennett, Freddie Hartsfield (James) Nance, and Alberta Hartsfield Smith; 20 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; devoted companion, Francis McGee; two devoted brothers/friends, Lee (Mary) Garrett and John P. Franklin, Sr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, at noon at Phillips Temple CME Church with Bishop Felton M. Smith, Jr., eulogist and Reverend Robert Henry officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Thursday, Oct. 6, and the family will receive friends from 6–8 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
