Alexander: New Federal Funding Helps Children By Supporting Training For Pediatricians At St. Jude

  • Thursday, November 17, 2016

Senator Lamar Alexander on Thursday made the following statement after the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services approved a $139,536 federal grant to help continue a successful program that supports the training of physicians at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

“This federal funding to help train pediatricians is great news for the thousands of children from around the globe who come to the world-renowned St.

Jude for treatment.”

In 2013, Senator Alexander co-sponsored the Children’s Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act, which reauthorized support for the Children’s Graduate Medical Education Program – a program that trains doctors at freestanding children’s hospitals, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. According to the Children’s Hospital Association, the program is effective in supporting the training of more than 6,000 pediatricians and pediatric specialists every year and nearly half of all pediatric residency training in the country.
