Lee Softball Falls To Mississippi College

  • Saturday, April 23, 2016
Thanks to a two-run walk off home run by Kristen Qualls the Lee softball team dropped game two of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader to Mississippi College from the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Flames (24-24-1) will look to end their season with a winning record as they wrap up the year tomorrow against the Choctaws (31-17, 18-14) at 3 p.m.

The Lee offense pounded out 14 hits but were unable to produce any extra base hits in the contest.  Senior catcher Emily Dagnan led the way with three hits and drove in a run while freshman Hallie Davis had two singles and two RBI.

Leigh Beatenbough added two hits and Amanda Lynn had a pair of singles, scored two runs and stole a base.

Beatenbough (9-9) also worked in the circle for 6 2/3 innings before giving up the decisive home run with two outs in the seventh.
The Canon, Ga. native allowed eights and six runs (two earned)  while striking out a pair.

Penny Nichols started and worked the 5 2/3 innings. She allowed 12 hits and five runs but none of them were earned. Game one winner, Carlie Sargent (17-9) came on and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn her second victory of the day.

The first six batters in the Choctaws' lineup scored a run and Alexia Harmon led the way with three singles and was scored on the walk off bomb by Qualls.

GAME 1 – LEE 1 MC 6
The Lee softball team saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as Mississippi College handed the Lady Flames a 6-1 defeat in game one of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader.

Choctaws' ace Sargent (16-9) set the tone for the home team tossing a complete game allowing five hits and just one run while striking out seven. She did not surrender a walk.

After winning her last four decisions, Lee starter Angie Hughes (10-12) ran into some trouble and pitched just 3 1/3 innings giving up six runs (five earned) on four hits and walked four batters.

Tipp City, Ohio native Bri Eichbaum kept the Lady Flames in the contest tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief.

The Lee offense, which leads the conference in team batting average, was held at bay by Sargent. Lexie Dean led the way with three singles and drove in the lone run for the Lady Flames in the third frame. Freshman Stevie Baird added a pair of singles while Annabeth Pruett scored the run.

Tylan Buckley got the Choctaws going in the second inning launching a three-run home run to left field. Qualls, Kimmie Conley and Lauren Mulligan also added run-scoring singles to the total.

Mississippi College tops the Lady Flames for the first time in the all-time series. Lee was a perfect 6-0 last season against the Choctaws.
