Folk/Pop Music By The Ballroom Thieves At Nightfall Friday

  • Monday, May 16, 2016

The Nightfall Concert Series, produced by Chattanooga Presents, continues its 29th season Friday at Miller Plaza with a headline performance by the Ballroom Thieves, and opening act Caney Creek Company.

Review for the Ballroom Thieves:

Performing for the first time in Chattanooga, the Ballrooms Thieves are an acoustic trio from New England performing a mélange of styles that blend folk, modern hymns, delta blues with a foundation of pop music. Cellist Calin Peters became a part of the band in 2013, making her the newest member when she joined guitarist Martin Earley and percussionist Devin Mauch. Under this strong formation, Peters also transitioned into a vocalist, occasionally singing lead and also equipping the band with its signature three-part harmonies.

The Ballroom Thieves recently released their first full-length album, A Wolf in the Doorway. The work as a whole reflects the new dynamic, and the excitement that managed to pull all of these songs together in a matter of months. The Thieves are quick to point out that the foundation of their latest work is a reflection of their travels, their interactions and their time on the road.

Review for Caney Creek Company:

The Chattanooga band Caney Creek Company will open the show at 7 p.m.  Until 2015, every member of CCC was a musician without a band, but by the end of the first rehearsal, the Chattanooga friends were a band without limits. Including bluegrass, folk and ballads, their music resonates with all types, especially fans of the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons. Newly self-taught banjoist Konstantine Vlasis had written only two songs when he first brought his friends together to play, but it was clear they had potential, and they have spent the past several months honing their skills and gelling as a band.

Nightfall 2016 represents a series of 15 free Friday-night concerts held at Miller Plaza in downtown Chattanooga. Each Friday through Aug. 26 (with the exception of June 10 and 17), Nightfall will showcase a broad spectrum of musical genres featuring a Chattanooga band at 7 p.m., followed by a headline show by a superior national artist at 8 p.m., many of whom are performing for the first time in our city.

Nightfall bulk discount beer and wine tickets will again be available this year at each show, offering a 20 percent savings on a packet of 20 drink tickets (typically $6 per individual ticket, but sold in a bulk packet for $96).  Food trucks and non-alcoholic drink concessions are also available on site. No outside food or beverages are allowed to be brought in to Nightfall.

For more information on this free community concert series, call 265-0771 or visit NightfallChattanooga.com for a complete, interactive website that includes music samples by each headliner, as well as other information for first-time attendees.
