Lorraine Jones Humble, widow of Joe Humble, died peacefully at her Signal Mountain, Tennessee, residence on May 18, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Lorraine was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Wartburg, Tn., to the late Lenny Hamby Jones and Fred Otto Jones.

She was an R.N. graduate of Mather School of Nursing, New Orleans, La., in 1951. There she met her future husband, Joe Humble, and they were married in 1953 until his death in September 1992. She had a long and varied career, as a delivery room nurse in New Orleans and as nursing supervisor at Parkridge Hospital in Chattanooga. The last 20 years of her career were as a licensure surveyor for the Tennessee Department of Health where she took pride in helping to maintain high standards of nursing care for patients in Tennessee. She was once named Tennessee Surveyor of the Year.  After 43 years in nursing, she retired and was named Nurse of the Year in 1995 by the Tennessee Nurses Association District 4.

Lorraine was known for her dry wit and good sense of humor and her steadfast devotion to her family, friends and those she found in need.  Known as “Grammie” by her grandchildren, she imparted a gracious and generous spirit of love and service to others.  Often in a quiet way, she would see a spiritual or financial need and was quick to meet it.  She had a strong faith in God and commitment to service for others.

In 2002, she moved to Signal Mountain and felt she found her true home. She became active in local organizations including the Signal Mountain Community Guild, where she was a past president and named Signal Mountain Woman of the Year in 2011.  She loved the Mountain Gardiners’ Club and her Presbyterian Women’s Circle.  She sat on the board of St. Barnabas Nursing Home and volunteered with the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Lorraine is survived by three children: son, Gary Humble, (fiancée, Chrissie); daughters, Julie Ann Horton (Joe) (Signal Mountain); and Rebecca Lynn Humble (Atlanta); and three grandchildren: Jordan Lee Humble (fiancée Jaclyn); Jessica Ray Marshall (Josh); and Jennifer Gail Humble.

Services will be held on Friday, May 20, at 11:30 a.m. at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church with visitation from 10-11:15 a.m.

Memorial tributes are suggested to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, Wally’s Friends, or Disabled American Veterans.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
