Cleveland Honored By Environmental Health Association

  • Monday, July 25, 2016

The city of Cleveland has been chosen to receive the 2016 Community Partnership Award presented by the Tennessee Environmental Health Association, Mayor Tom Rowland said Monday.

The award is given to an individual or organization that has made significant impact either on the profession of environmental health or the environmental health of the community.

This is the first year that the award has been presented.

Mayor Rowland said the group determined that the city of Cleveland is deserving of the award given the impact of many city programs through operation of greenways, multiple city parks, including a recently opened city dog park, multiple city pools promotion of the annual Mouse Creek stream cleanup, and supporting the Shade Tree Board.

The award will be formally presented on Sept. 29 at the Coffey Barn on Benton Pike in Cleveland.

The City Council, in other action, authorized the mayor to sign an MOU with the Cleveland Housing Authority for the purchase of a K-9 for $14,000.

Rafael Santiago, who moved to Cleveland two years ago from New York, said he wants to start a youth boxing program.

He has opened Five Points Boxing.

Councilman Avery Johnson said the city once had a boxing program and said it helped turn around a number of youths.

Mr. Santiago was advised to meet with city police and the sheriff's office.
