New $45 Court Fee In Criminal Cases To Provide Funding To Partnership For Families, Children And Adults, Children's Advocacy Center

  • Wednesday, July 27, 2016

A new $45 court fee assessed to "those who misbehave" will go to the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults and the Children's Advocacy Center.

County Mayor Jim Coppinger said $21 would go to each agency per case and the county would get $3.

He noted that the two agencies provide valuable services to victims of crimes.

The county mayor said the Legislature authorized such a fee a number of years ago. He said one agency approached him about implementing it earlier, then the second joined in the request.

He said many defendants may be unable or willing to pay so it is not known how much it will bring in. Also, judges must assess the fee in each case.

Pam Ladd, Partnership CEO, said it is true that the fee may often go uncollected, but she said it still "could be a game changer" for us both.

She said the judges have indicated support.

Ms. Ladd said the agencies will provide quarterly reports on the amount of collections and the way the funds are being spent.
