Notre Dame High School has named Raul Fernandez as its new head tennis coach.

“The Notre Dame community is extremely excited to have someone the caliber of Raul taking over the fine tradition of the Fighting Irish tennis program,” said Matt Pobieglo, the school's athletic director. “I would also like to thank coach Nancy Fox for her years of hard work and dedication to the Notre Dame tennis program. She will continue to be a tremendous asset to the Notre Dame community and our student athletes.”

Fernandez comes to Notre Dame with a wealth of experience as a coach and tennis professional.

The former Academic All-American has 30-plus years of playing experience and is a member of the Professional Tennis Registry(PTR).  Fernandez took over the head coaching duties at Hixson High School in 2009, where he led the Wildcats to three district boys’ championships in 2013-15 and two district girls’ titles in 2013 and 2014. A former coach of the year led the Wildcats boys’ teams to the TSSAA state championship final four in 2014 and 2015.

“Coach Fernandez will be a tremendous asset to our student-athletes and tennis program. The Notre Dame community is very fortunate to have someone with the knowledge and tennis teaching ability that Raul possesses,” Pobieglo said. “His passion and knowledge of the game will help to continue the strong foundation of Notre Dame Tennis.”
