Covenant Women Lose 1-0 At Maryville

  • Wednesday, September 28, 2016
The Covenant women's soccer team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 loss at Maryville on Wednesday evening in USA South action.

The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, Sept. 27, but wet field conditions pushed the match back a day to Wednesday.

Covenant (6-2, 4-1 USA South) still maintains a two-point lead in the West Division standings after the loss. It was the first time since Sept. 1 that the Lady Scots were defeated. Maryville (2-5-1, 2-2-1 USA South) has not lost to Covenant since 2009.

In a defensive struggle that saw the two teams combine for 15 shots in the contest, Maryville scored the lone goal in the 20th minute of play.
Miranda Lukas collected her first goal of the year, assisted by Casey Gentile, to give the host Scots a 1-0 lead. It was the first time Covenant had trailed in a match since falling behind 1-0 to Sewanee on Sept. 7, a span of five full matches and parts of two others.

Covenant was outshot 6-2 in the first half, but put the pressure on Maryville in the second half. The Lady Scots outshot Maryville 6-1 in the final 45 minutes and had five corner kicks, but were unable to find the equalizer. Abby Gienapp and Ashlyn Franks both had shots on target in the second period, but Maryville keeper Mandy Marshall made saves on both attempts.

Overall, Covenant held a slim 8-7 edge in total shots. Anna Porch and Anna Robertson each had two shots. Rachel Lemay made three saves, while Marshall tallied two for Maryville.
