Maryville Holds Off Covenant for 3-1 Win

  • Friday, October 13, 2017
The Covenant men's soccer team sliced into a two-goal deficit late in the second half, but could not complete the comeback as the Scots fell to visiting Maryville, 3-1, on Friday night at Scotland Yard.

The loss drops Covenant to 5-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 inside the USA South.
Maryville, ranked regionally by the United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA), remains unbeaten in league play at 7-0 and goes to 12-1 overall.

A defensive first half saw just nine total shots taken, but Maryville was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. Jameson Elmore scored the first of two goals on the night as he got enough on a shot attempt off a cross from Milan Card and the ball deflected off a Covenant defender and into the net for the goal. Maryville outshot Covenant 6-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, Covenant put more pressure on Maryville but would fall behind 2-0 in the 71st minute. Again it was Elmore with the goal for the Northern Scots as he took a short pass from inside the box and finished it from close range giving Maryville a 2-0 lead. The goals for Elmore give him four on the year.

Covenant clawed to within one goal in the 78th minute. Anthony Buzzeo weaved through several Maryville defenders and into the right-hand side of the 6-yard box before getting off a close shot that ricocheted off the post and into the net. The goal was Buzzeo's second of the year and gave Covenant some momentum heading into the final 12 minutes.

But Maryville had an answer as Randy Reichenberger headed in a throw-in from the top of the 6-yard box in the 83rd minute to up the margin back to two goals and secure the win for the visiting Scots. The goal was Reichenberger's fifth of the year.

Covenant keeper Jonathan Crossman made two saves on the night, while Maryville keeper Ryan Jorgensen made three saves. Maryville held a 17-8 shot edge, and 6-1 in corner kicks. Carl Simakoff led Covenant with four shots on the night.
