  • Saturday, February 25, 2017
The Covenant baseball team was swept in a three-game series at LaGrange as the host Panthers took both games of Saturday's doubleheader. LaGrange won the first game 7-1 before taking game two 15-3.

Covenant (5-7, 0-3 USA South) has dropped four straight overall. LaGrange goes to 12-1 overall on the year and 3-0 in conference play.

In the first game, LaGrange scored single runs in the first six innings to slowly pull away from the Scots. Covenant got on the board first in the top half of the first inning as the Scots strung together four hits in the frame, capped by Alex Kerr's RBI single to left field that scored Luke Harvey.

But LaGrange answered with one run in each of the first six innings to take a 6-1 lead.
Blake Butcher had two hits and two RBIs for LaGrange, while Blane Swift went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. The offense was enough for LaGrange starter Andrew Weekley (3-0) as he tossed eight innings and allowed one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Covenant starter Drew Bradley (2-2) allowed three earned runs over seven innings of work with three strikeouts and no walks allowed. Julien Amorelli had two hits to lead Covenant's seven-hit attack. Harvey went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

In game two, the LaGrange offense exploded for 15 runs on 14 hits to complete the three-game series sweep with a 15-3 win.

Like in Saturday's first game, Covenant got on the board early with a run in the top of the first. Amorelli delivered a two-out RBI single to left-center field that enabled Caleb Bloye to score from second and give the Scots a 1-0 lead.

But LaGrange answered with a run in the first and then five more in the second to open up a 6-1 lead. The Panthers added two runs in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth for their final tallies.

Butcher was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs for LaGrange, while Tavin Thompson drove in three runs on two base hits. Dax Winningham (1-0) came on in relief to pick up the win as he lasted 1.1 innings.

Zach Kyzer (1-2) was dealt the loss for Covenant. Ross Skipper came on in the fifth and threw two scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Caleb Bloye finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Harvey scored two runs and had a steal. Kerr, Amorelli, Joel Johnson and Donny Lewis all had a hit apiece.
