Dalton High Recognized As AP Honors School For Fifth Year

  • Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Dalton High School has been named to the list of 674 AP (Advanced Placement) Honors Schools in Georgia for 2017 for the fifth year. Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods released the list of Georgia schools receiving honors as reported by the College Board who administers the AP exams. Dalton High was recognized in two areas: AP STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) School and AP Access and Support School.

“We are pleased to be recognized for our students’ achievement in Advanced Placement for the fifth year,” said Steve Bartoo, principal. “We encourage all students to stretch themselves academically and take AP courses when appropriate. Passing an AP Exam at a 3 or above may earn students college credit that can really jumpstart their college career. This recognition is really dedicated to our teachers who offer rigorous coursework and ensure our students are prepared for post-secondary education.“

Dalton High offers 12 Advanced Placement classes. The school was one of only 204 schools to be honored as an AP STEM and only one of 65 schools to be recognized as an AP Access and Support School.

"I’d like to congratulate Dalton High School for the continued recognition of their exemplary Advanced Placement Program,” said Dr. Jim Hawkins, superintendent of Dalton Public Schools.  “ This recognition is just another example of how Dalton High is successfully preparing our students for college-level coursework.”

State School Superintendent Woods stated, “It is my pleasure to recognize these schools—and by extension, their students, teachers and staff—for the excellent work being done to expand opportunity to all students."

Dalton High was recognized in the following two categories:
•        AP STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Schools: Schools with students testing in at least two (2) AP math courses and two (2) AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science A)

•        AP Access and Support Schools: Schools with at least 30 percent of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African- American and/or Hispanic and 30 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.
