Moc Wrestlers Win 26-12 At Gardner-Webb

  • Friday, February 3, 2017
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team posted a 26-12 road win at Gardner-Webb tonight.  The Mocs won seven of the 10 individual matches, and added on five bonus points to take the Southern Conference victory.

Sophomore Alonzo Allen continued his hot-streak with a 13-6 decision over Landon LoAlbo at 125.  It was his sixth win in a row and the seventh in his last eight outings.  He improved to 13-10 overall and 5-0 in SoCon action.

Sophomore Chris Debien has also put together a six-match streak of his own, following today's 6-2 decision over Philip Anderson at 133.
Sophomore Chase Zemenak gave UTC an 11-0 lead with a tech fall at 141.

The Bulldogs quickly answered with a major decision at 149 and a tech fall of their own at 157.  That left the team score at 11-9 at the halfway point.

165 featured a pair of undefeateds in SoCon action, with Chattanooga junior Justin Lampe at 4-0 going against GWU junior Tyler Marinelli at 5-0.  Lampe pulled off the impressive win with a 7-3 decision that saw him control most of the match.

The Mocs looked to be pulling away with a 14-9 lead, but Gardner-Webb closed the gap with a win at 174.  No. 19 Bryce Carr defeated Hunter Gamble 4-2 for his 20th victory of the season at 184.  Senior Clay Dent clinched the dual with a strong 10-5 decision over Kyle Ash at 197.

With the match decided, No. 9 Jared Johnson pinned Boyce Cornwell at heavyweight for the final score.

"That was a huge win for Justin Lampe," state UTC head coach Heath Eslinger.  "I thought we won where we should win and had some guys get bonus points, which helped.  Overall, it was a good performance to move us into Sunday."

UTC improved to 6-8 overall and 4-1 in SoCon action, while GWU dropped to 5-8 and 2-4 in league duals.  The Mocs travel to Boone, N.C., on Feb. 5 to take on No. 16 Appalachian State.  The Mountaineers are in first place in the SoCon race with an 11-2 overall record and 5-0 mark in SoCon matches.
