Greensboro Sweeps Covenant In Double Header

  • Saturday, February 4, 2017
Visiting Greensboro completed a three-game sweep of the Covenant baseball team by taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader on Lookout Mountain. The Scots fell in game one 12-8 in a seven-inning affair before falling 5-0 in the series finale.

Covenant drops to 0-3 on the year, while Greensboro is 3-0.

GAME ONE: Greensboro 12, Covenant 8

Covenant battled back from a 4-0 deficit in the early innings, but Greensboro's offense was too much for the Scots as the visiting Pride scored seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take a 12-8 victory.

Joel Johnson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Julien Amorelli had a hit and three RBIs and Devin Cerrato went 2-for-4 with three runs driven in as well.
Forrest Hunter and Taylor Bloye had two hits apiece.

Greensboro led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the second, but Covenant struck for three in its half of the frame. Hunter drove in Alex Kerr with a single and Cerrato followed with a two-run single to center field to cut the deficit to 4-3. In the third, the Scots took a 5-4 lead as Hunter drove in another run with an RBI single and Amorelli would produce an RBI ground out.

But Greensboro struck for a run in the fourth, then five more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 12-5 lead. The Scots put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh as Amorelli drove in a pair with a single and Cerrato singled home, but the Pride relief staff was able to shut the door and take the win.

Drew Bradley (0-1) made the start for the Scots and went four innings allowing two earned run with five strikeouts.

Tyler Garam went three innings for Greensboro, but it was Willis Booth (1-0) that picked up the win in relief as he tossed three shutout innings. Andrew Ray came on for the save in the seventh. Blake Glass went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Brandon Soden and Brady Dignan had two hits apiece for the Pride.

GAME TWO: Greensboro 5, Covenant 0

Piero Amador went 5.2 scoreless innings and Greensboro completed the sweep off the strength of its pitching in a 5-0 win over the Scots in the series finale.

Greensboro scored two runs in the first, then added one in the third and two in the sixth for the final tally. Soden went 2-for-5 and Jacob Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Pride.

Zach Kyzer (0-1) made his collegiate debut on the mound for the Scots and lasted 2.1 innings and struck out three. Sam Doherty went 3.2 innings before Taylor Bloye and Ross Skipper threw three shutout innings.

Luke Harvey, Trenton Nobles, Johnson, Z Arima and Hunter all had a hit for the Scots.
