  • Tuesday, March 21, 2017
Alex Kerr had three RBIs and Trenton Nobles homered, but the Covenant baseball team fell to Oglethorpe 11-8 on Tuesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.

Covenant (8-14) was swept in the season series by Oglethorpe (9-10) as the Stormy Petrels won the first game between the programs on Feb.
22 in Atlanta.

The Scots got on the scoreboard first with a run in the first inning. Covenant loaded the bases with one out before Julien Amorelli produced an RBI ground out to make it 1-0. But Oglethorpe would score four runs in the top of the second, highlighted by Britton Araujo's two-run homer to left field, giving the Petrels a 4-1 lead.

Covenant answered in its half of the second when Nobles launched a two-run homer to right field, scoring Z Arima, to make it 4-3. The homer was Nobles' second of the year and second in the last three games. The home run barrage continued in the top of the third as Oglethorpe's Adrian Celata took one out to left-center field, a two-run shot, making it 6-3 Petrels.

The Scots got a run back in the fourth on Christian Murray's RBI infield single, his first collegiate hit, to draw within 6-4. In the fifth, Kerr delivered with a three-run double to right field giving Covenant a 7-6 lead.

But Oglethorpe responded with three runs in the seventh and then one more in both the eighth and ninth innings to pull away for the win.

Arima went 2-for-3 and Murray added two hits in four at-bats for Covenant. Amorelli, Murray and Luke Harvey all had one RBI apiece to go along with Kerr's three and Nobles' two.

Matt Herrin (0-1) got the loss for Covenant out of the bullpen, while Oglethorpe reliever Sam Traxler (1-0) got the win. Preston Vegotsky notched his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Four different players had two hits apiece for Oglethorpe, while Araujo had three RBIs. Celata and Matt Motz both had homered and had two RBIs on the day.

Covenant opens a three-game USA South series at William Peace on Friday in Cary, N.C. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
