In a tight match featuring two teams that came into the day undefeated in conference play, the Covenant men's tennis team fell 5-4 to USA South foe Piedmont on Wednesday evening at the Covenant Tennis Complex.

The loss was the first in USA South play for the Scots (6-7, 2-1 USA South).
Piedmont (5-6, 3-0 USA South) remains in first place in the West Division of the conference.

Covenant built a 2-1 lead in the doubles portion of the match. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox took down Jackson Hill and Nathan Metzger 8-2 at the No. 1 spot, while Trey Wood and Connor Shimmel were 8-4 winners at No. 3 over Kanler Cumbass and Harrison LaBollita.

Piedmont would rally to tie the score at 3-3 in singles play with wins at Nos. 5 and 6. Cox bested Bryan Barnett 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot for Covenant.

All three of the remaining singles matches went to three sets. Cumbass gave Piedmont a brief 4-3 lead when he won 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 over Micah Fox at No. 4, but Harvie would tie the match back up with his 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1 win over Metzger at the top spot.

The match was decided in a thrilling, three-set match between Piedmont's Hill and Covenant's Logan Hull at the third flight. Hull took the first set 6-4, but Hill rallied with a 6-3 win in the second. Hull grabbed a 6-5 lead in the third set, but again Hill rallied to send the set into a tiebreak. Despite a valiant effort from Hull, Hill prevailed 7-4 in the tiebreak to give Piedmont the win.

Covenant hosts Huntingdon in a USA South match on Saturday at 11 a.m., before taking on regional foe Berry at 5:30 p.m. Both matches are set to take place on Lookout Mountain.
