Lee Men Claim 6-3 Tennis Victory In Huntsville

  • Wednesday, March 22, 2017
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lee University men’s tennis team swept the doubles competition and won three singles matches on their way to a 6-3 over The University of Alabama in Huntsville Wednesday afternoon. The Flames improved to 7-3 overall and evened its record at 2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH dropped to 5-12 and 0-5 in conference play.

“Road matches are all tough in the GSC,” admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes. “Alabama Huntsville came out strong in doubles and we did a pretty good job finishing.
Our start there could have been a bit better, but I am pleased with the finish.”

All three of the doubles matches were decided by three points or less. Rhys Milne and Igor Schattan were 8-5 winners over Brodie Holmes and Rodrigo Palomino in the No. 1 slot. Daniel Prata and Wes Lemke held on to defeat Timo Christen and Harrison Stone 9-7. Jake Okines and Boyd Blackburn held off Elliot Hopson and Sebastian Rohrbach to record the 9-8 victory.

Blackburn pushed the Lee lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. Milne beat Noah Pring 6-3 and 6-4 to clinch the team win. Prata picked up Lee’s final team point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Christen.

The Chargers would get on the board with a win at No. 2 singles. Chris Miller used a 7-4 tie-breaker to win the opening set against Teodor Deljanovski and finished with a 6-3 margin in the second set.

Rohrbach and Okines split their first two sets. Okines won the first set 6-4 and Rohrbach the second 6-1. With the third set tied at 5-5, Rohrbach was ruled the match winner when Okines retired.

Hopson supplied the final team score with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Schattan.

The Flames continue their four-match road stretch with a trip to Clinton, Miss., to face Mississippi College on Saturday. The GSC match is scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT.
