Jazzanooga is gearing up to celebrate National Jazz Appreciation Month with an array of artistic and cultural performances and events.

National Jazz Appreciation Month was created in 2001 by Smithsonian Museum of American History and supported by The United States Congress in 2003 to celebrate the heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. This year the national theme is “Women in Jazz.”

Jazzanooga will present as their main headliner this year world renowned jazz pianist and singer, Judy Carmichael. The event will be held on Sunday, April 2, at Chattanooga Theatre Centre, beginning at 5 p.m.

“We are known to seek out meaningful collaborations with other organizations and businesses to help us promote the power of the Arts because we recognize that it is through these partnerships we can provide more access to the arts for our community,” states Shane Morrow, Jazzanooga director. “We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to partner with CTC on this upcoming event.”

"The Chattanooga Theatre Centre is incredibly excited to partner with Jazzanooga," said Kim Jackson, interim executive director of Chattanooga Theatre Centre.  "We admire and appreciate all that Jazzanooga does to bring innovative and engaging arts and cultural experiences to our community and we are honored to host this event. The CTC and Jazzanooga want to make 'collaboration' the new buzz word in Chattanooga - together we truly can create amazing opportunities and accessible experiences for all."

Review for Judy Carmichael:

Grammy nominated pianist Judy Carmichael is one of the world’s leading interpreters of stride piano and swing. Count Basie nicknamed her “Stride”, acknowledging the command with which she plays this technically and physically demanding jazz piano style. Judy’s CD “I Love Being Here With You” is her first all-vocal CD, exploring her love of witty lyrics, juicy ballads and Broadway Standards.

2016 marked the 17th anniversary of Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired, the popular Podcast, SiriusXM and Public Radio Show, which Ms. Carmichael produces and hosts, talking with everyone from Tony Bennett to Seth MacFarlane about their love of jazz and how it inspires them.

She has written two books on stride piano and numerous articles on the subject of jazz. She has served on a variety of music panels at the National Endowment for the Arts, spoken before the Presidentially appointed National Council on the Arts advocating for individual fellowship grants, and is one of the few jazz pianists honored as a Steinway Artist.
