Hixson resident and solid recreational tennis player Nita Shelton will be a regular attendee at this week’s NCAA D-III Men’s and Women’s National Tennis Championships held at the Champions Club for more than one reason.

Shelton’s son, Scott Shelton, is a Williams senior two weeks from graduating and works part time in the Williams sports information department and will post stories from the campus athletic department on the tennis teams efforts this week "and I also like to volunteer when I can to give back to the sport,” said Nita."I would be here helping out even if the Williams teams were not competing."

Carrying a 4.0 rating as a player on the court, she actually has three city golf titles to her credit , played golf at GPS helping the Bruisers win the state title her freshman year (1980) and was a two-time state individual runner-up before carrying a 4.0 grade point average and earning Academic All-America honors for Kentucky.

“I had aspirations of playing pro golf entering college, but a car wreck my sophomore year ended that idea, but I still play and it is a good recreational sport playing with business clients.”

Scott, who won a state junior golf title at the age of 12 and played tennis at McCallie has also done well in the academic area as he graduated as McCallie’s salutatorian in 2013 with  4.2 GPA.

“I look forward to a great week of tennis and will help in any area I can,” said Nita.
