Apison To Get New Monument To 15 Tornado Victims From 2011 Storm

  • Thursday, July 27, 2017

A new monument will be erected in Apison to the 15 people who died in a tornado in 2011.

Trustee Bill Hullander, a lifelong Apison resident, said it will be erected at a new site.

The original monument at London Lane was destroyed by a motorist who went out of control.

The new remembrance will be by the new Apison fire hall.

Trustee Hullander said the community raised $35,000 for the project. He said those producing it mostly just requested that their costs be reimbursed.

He said there will be a memorial walk around a raised center. It will include a tree with 15 leaves - honoring each person who lost their life. The leaves will be in the concrete and will include the names of those killed.

Trustee Hullander said at the initial site a flag pole will be erected and there will be new landscaping.

A new Welcome to Apison sign will go up there.
