UTC's Payne Named Student-Athlete Of The Week

Chattanooga men’s cross country runner John Payne has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Sept. 13 to Sept. 19, the league office announced Wednesday.
 
Payne, a junior from Portland, Tennessee, posted a time of 26:18:44 to finish third at the Montevallo Falcon Classic on Saturday. Payne led Chattanooga to a second place finish, just behind Mississippi State.
 
Payne, a chemical engineering major, currently holds a 4.0 grade point average.
 
Also nominated for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week: Moriah Smith (The Citadel volleyball), Chris Bouyer (ETSU football), Andy Schumpert (Furman football), Ashley Muench (UNCG volleyball), Valeria Bermeo (Mercer women’s soccer), Kasey Cooke (Western Carolina women’s soccer) and Hayley Younginer (Wofford volleyball).
