The Lee University Wind Ensemble will open its spring semester of the 2017/18 season with a performance on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.

Under the batons of Conductor Dr. David Holsinger, professor of music at Lee, and Associate Conductor Winona Gray Holsinger, director of instrumental projects, the ensemble will open the evening with a transcription by David Holsinger of American composer and conductor John Philip Sousa’s “The White Rose March.” Other compositions featured throughout the evening will include a wedding march by British composer, Derek Bourgeois, and the complete “English Folk Song Suite,” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, dating from 1923.

Following the ensemble’s performance of a Belgian march by Pierre Leemans honoring the Parachutistes Belges of World War II, the group will present John Krance’s band transcription of Carl Orff’s 1935 scenic cantata “Carmina Burana.” The performance will conclude with Sousa’s “On Parade,” a recent acquisition from the U.S. Marine Band, Washington.

“The 2018 edition of the ensemble includes a number of new musicians, but promises the quality execution that has become expected from these highly talented musicians,” said David Holsinger.

The Lee Wind Ensemble is committed to the highest level of performance of instrumental ensemble literature for winds and percussion. It is a non-traveling group that performs for special concerts on Lee’s campus.

The personnel of this auditioned ensemble contains not only music majors, but also a variety of majors from across Lee’s campus. Since the ensemble’s founding 18 years ago, it continues to represent a cross-section of the best instrumental musicians on campus.

The concert is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. For those unable to attend, livestream viewing will be available at https://livestream.com/leeu. For more information, contact the School of Music 614-8240.
