Lee Tennis Teams Sweep Christian Brothers

The Lee University tennis teams swept visiting Christian Brothers University in a pair of Gulf South Conference matches Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The men won 5-1, while the Lady Flames were 5-2 winners.

The Flames (4-1, 1-1 GSC) held a 3-0 lead following doubles competition. Boyd Blackburn and Bruno Medeiros blanked Abel Kim and Nick Cotros at No. 3 doubles. Rhys Milne and Jake Okines were 8-2 winners over Atilio Flores and Andres Calzacorta. Daniel Prata and Igor Schattan held off Javier Saez and Lorenzo Maccarini, 8-6, to complete the doubles sweep.

Medeiros outlasted Saez to win their opening set, 7-5, and pulled Lee within one team point of securing the win with a 6-1 mark in the second set.

Maccarini helped CBU (3-10, 1-5 GSC) avoid the shutout with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Okines at No.
2 singles.

Milne dropped the opening set, 7-5, to Flores before forcing a third set with a 6-3 advantage in the second set. Milne completed his comeback and clinched the team win with a 6-2 margin in the third set.

The final three singles matches were left unfinished. Blackburn led 5-2 in the opening set, while Prata had won his first set 6-1.

The Lady Flames improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference, while Christian Brothers dropped to 6-7, 1-5 GSC.

Joanna Grzegrzolka and Ana Webber blanked Melody Mays and Brittany Weathersby, 8-0, to open the team scoring. Judit Aubets and Meg Mattis doubled up Laura Beth Hardesty and Carley Sickinger, 8-4, to even the score at 1-1. Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto outlasted Lauren Woog and Tara McElroy, 9-7, to give the Lady Flames a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition.

Tondi extended Lee’s lead with a 6-3, 6-2 No. 1 singles win over McElroy. Woog pulled CBU back to within one team point by defeating Garcia-Nieto at No. 2 singles. Sickinger beat Aubets Macia 7-5 and 6-3 at No. 3 singles to put the Lady Flames one point away from securing the team victory.

Webber shut out Mattis, 6-0, in their opening set and clinched the individual match and the team win with a 6-1 mark in the second set.

The final two singles matches were left unfinished. Grzegrzolka won her first set 6-1 and led Mays 3-0 in the second set when the team match was decided. Hardesty was leading Weathersby 5-4 in their opening set when the match was called.

The Flamesand Lady Flames are scheduled to travel to Shorter University on Wednesday for another set of GSC contests at 1 p.m.
