Korean War Veteran Held Long Career In Grocery Industry

Donald D. Haynes, Sr., 87, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at his home.

He was the son of the late Harvey Chester and Ollie Mae Argo Haynes.  Mr. Haynes was a lifelong resident of Tennessee being born in Sewanee and raised in Tracy City. He spent his adult life in Chattanooga where he was an active member of the Lake Hills Church of Christ.

He worked in the grocery industry, for over 50 years, being employed by the Home Stores, Red Food Stores and Bi-Lo.  He retired in 1996, as vice President of Real Estate, for Bi-Lo and served on the Hamilton County W.W.T.A. board for 17 years. He was a veteran of the US Army in which he served during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia “Sally” Haynes and brothers, Edward and James Haynes.

He is survived by two sons, Donald D. Haynes, Jr., (wife Patti) Paul Kevin Haynes, Lana Haynes, all of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Matthew Haynes, Tanner Haynes, and Leaha Artalona, sisters-in-law Charlestine Grant, of East Ridge, and Jan Flynn, of Milwaukee, OR, along with several nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services will be held in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, on Thursday, April 19, at 2:30 p.m., with Ministers Joey Davis and Richard Twitchell officiating. Internment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.  

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 18, from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m., and on Thursday, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.  

Active pallbearers will be Jim Grant Jr., Chuck Grant, Jim Parks, Bill Bennett, Matthew Haynes and Tanner Haynes.  Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Wallace, Richard Twitchell, Dale Clark and Jerry Hendricks.
