Walter Lynn Mitchell
Walter Lynn Mitchell, 84 of Dalton, received his heavenly home on Sunday, April 15, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Dewey and Dessie Pritchard Mitchell; wife and mother of his children, Shirley Hardin Mitchell; spouse, Barbara Roberts Mitchell; brothers, Dewey “Dude” Mitchell, Malvin “Mac” Mitchell, Wilbur Ross “WR” Mitchell, Willard Mitchell and Jimmy Mitchell; sisters, Becky Mitchell King, Mary Norman and Alene Mitchell Gamblin; granddaughter-in-law, Katie Evans; and great-granddaughter, Braylee Evans.
Walt was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member of Dug Gap Baptist Church and served as a deacon for over 50 years. He also served as Sunday School director for many years. He was a Whitfield County commissioner for one term. Walt was an alumni of Valley Point High School Class of 1953. Walt was an avid fisherman, baseball, basketball and football coach. He also umpired many sports. Walt was a member of the Conasauga Bassmasters Club for many years as well.
Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Maria Mitchell, and Van Mitchell; daughter, Cindy Mitchell Evans, all of Dalton; six grandchildren, Emma Mitchell, Joshua Mitchell, Katie Mitchell Phillips, Zach Mitchell and Trey Evans, all of Dalton, and Cassie Mitchell Langford of Cleveland. Several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Dug Gap Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Cummings, Pastor Duane Mills and Rev. Bob Bagley officiating. Entombment will follow in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers serving include, Trey Evans, Zach Mitchell, Joshua Mitchell, Brian Clayton, Rusty Langford and David Phillips.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m.
