Covenant Men's Tennis Claims Share Of Conference Title

  • Thursday, April 5, 2018
The Covenant men's tennis team claimed at least a share of the USA South West Division regular season title after the Scots eased past Berea, 9-0, in USA South action on Thursday night in Berea.

The win puts Covenant (15-3, 8-1 USA South) in a spot to at least share the division crown for a second consecutive year. The Scots will have a chance to win the division outright with a win over Maryville on Friday at home.

Playing a Berea (0-11, 0-10 USA South) squad that is winless, it was a different kind of lineup that took the court and dominated for the Scots.

In doubles play, Logan Hull and Taylor Galloway moved up to the No.
1 spot and took down Berea's Michael Malpartida and Dakota Massucco by an 8-1 final. At the second position, Ben Tonkel and Sam Jordan combined for an 8-0 sweep of Svyatopolk Carroll and Juan Chavez, while Paxton Haggerty and Tristian Smallwood were 8-1 winners over Evan Day and Issac Domenech at the third spot.

In singles, Hull moved up to the No. 1 spot for a second time this year and claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Malpartida. Hull is now 2-0 at the top flight on the year. Galloway was in the second flight and he took down Massucco 6-2, 6-2 and Haggerty was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Brandon Mitchell at No. 3.

Jordan collected his second singles win of the year as he bested Domenech 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Smallwood also took his second singles victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Day at No. 5.

Covenant then took a default point at No. 6, as Berea's Chavez was unable to play, to complete the sweep.

Covenant will host Maryville on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Covenant Tennis Complex. Senior Day activities will take place before the match as the Scots honor seniors Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox.
