Gilbert Leighton Moore, 82 of New Salem Community, Rising Fawn, Georgia passed away, April 8, 2018 at a local hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

He was a 1953 graduate of Dade County High School and participated in the Dade County 4-H Club.He participated in the Annual Meeting of The State of Georgia 100-Bushel Corn Club sponsored by Dade County Farm Bureau in 1952. He produced 115 bushels of corn placing third in the competition. His dad, Art Moore won the contest with 158 bushels.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Military Police Corp stationed at Sandia Base, N.M.

He retired after serving 37 years at Rock-Tenn Mill Division which is now West Rock. He served as tour foreman in the last few years of service with great pride and dedication.

Farming was his really great love. He grew many varieties of tomatoes and vegetables. He participated in the Chattanooga Market, Blue Cross Farmer’s Market, Dade County Georgia Farmer’s Market and provided many local restaurants with his vegetables and especially his different varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

Gilbert was a life-long resident of Rising Fawn, Ga. (New Salem Community) except for his military days and a very short time in the Chattanooga area. He was born Oct. 15, 1935.

He really enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and usually played first base.

He was most proud of his grandchildren and had such great love for his family.

He was a member of the New of the New Salem United Methodist Church and the Optimist of Trenton/Dade.

His hobbies included golfing, baseball and bowling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Effie (Street) Moore; his brothers, Malcolm, Carroll, Grover, George Washington and Homer Gene Moore; sisters, Mildred (Moore) Pringle, Lola (Moore) Kyte, Grace (Moore) Johnson and Ernestine Moore. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Gail Faye (Moore) Obrzut and son, Leighton Lebron Moore and son-in-law, Jeff Hedgecoth, daughter-in-law, Kelly Flynn Moore.

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife, Sarah Moore of 52 years, his children, Richard (Angie) Moore, Sweetwater, Tn., Victor Moore, Rising Fawn, Samuel K. Moore and Todd Belk of Asbury Park N.J., Rachel (Greg) Bolin, Crossville, Tn., and son-in-law, Robert Obrzut, Kingston.

His surviving grandchildren are Jennifer, Jordan, Jessica, Justin and Jake Hedgecoth, Crossville, Sarah Ashley Moore and Kaden Moore of Rising Fawn, Laura Moore, Chattanooga, Johnathan (Brittany) Moore of Englewood, Nathan Moore, North Carolina, Alinda Moore, Michigan, Greg (Christine) Hall, Michigan and Rebecca Bartos, Kingston, Tn.

He also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Pastor Jodi Ihfe officiating. Burial will be held in Hawkins Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 5-9 p.m., on Wednesday, from 11a.m.-2 p.m.
