Flames Win 3-1 Over Mississippi College

  • Sunday, September 30, 2018
Samaan Williams scored twice and the Lee men's soccer team remained undefeated in Gulf South Conference Play with an impressive 3-1 road victory over Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon.

Williams now has four goals on the year and has scored in the last three matches. The junior gave the Flames a 2-0 lead with his first strike in the 25th minute off an assist from Alfie Coldron.

Coldron scored his fourth goal of the year at the 11:10 mark to get visitors on the board.
Jose Orellana set the goal for his fourth assist of the season.

The score would remain 2-0 until the 79th minute when the Choctaws broke through on a penalty kick goal from Connor Johnson.

Williams would put things away less than two minutes later however as he drilled home the third goal for the Flames (80:57) off a pass from Palle Jespersen.

Daniel Hrenko recorded three saves in net for Lee while Keaton Halbert yielded the three goals and tallied five saves for Mississippi College.

"That was a big time win for this team and a whole team effort today," said head coach Derek Potteiger. "We have showed the ability to win a number of different ways and today was another good example of managing the game throughout and particularly being aware of how to take advantage of the opponent in the different phases of the game."

The Flames will put their 7-2-1 overall mark and 5-0 conference record on the line next weekend as they travel to West Florida (6-2-1, 4-0) on Friday and Spring Hill (7-1, 3-0) on Sunday. The weekend could very well be a GSC Playoff preview as all three teams are currently unbeaten in league play.

The loss drops the Choctaws to fourth place in the conference standings at 3-2. MC is now 5-3 overall.

"This is a tough road trip and to leave Mississippi with two wins is a significant accomplishment. We will enjoy this win as a team but will need to quickly regain focus for our next weekend," concluded Potteiger.
