Covenant Women Tripped In Overtime 2-1

  • Saturday, September 8, 2018
After tonight’s double overtime contest against Birmingham Southern, Covenant walked away with a 2-1 loss at Goldfarb Field in Birmingham. The Lady Scots’ single goal in the first period wasn’t enough to earn the win against the host Panthers.

Covenant got on the board early when Lizzy Hightower found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Kailey Burrell provided the assist in the seventh minute score. The goal was Hightower's first of the season.

The Panthers made it even in the first half when Sydney Barrow scored on the rebound of a blocked shot by Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay.

Lemay had three saves in the second half to maintain the 1-1 score. The scoreless second half, despite chances for both teams, drove the match to overtime.

During the first overtime the Scots took one shot to the Panthers two. At the end of the extra time the score still stood at 1-1, so the teams headed to a second overtime.

Covenant was unable to get off a shot in the final overtime. After a wide shot, Birmingham Southern’s game-winner came in the 105th minute as Abby Kay Choate's goal was assisted by Emma Choate.

The Panthers outshot the Scots 22-9, but with a 7-5 on goal ratio. Lemay made five saves in the loss, while Birmingham Southern’s Blakley Jones had four.

Hightower and Burrell took two shots apiece, all on goal. Anna Robertson added one of her own.

The Lady Scots fall to 0-1-2 on the season.

Covenant is set to face Sewanee in its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Kickoff at Scotland Yard is set for 7 p.m.
