Teen Dies After Vehicle Involved In Chase Hits Power Pole On E. 38th Street And Catches Fire

A teen died and another was injured in a wreck on E. 38th Street on Monday night in a vehicle driven by a man who was fleeing police.

Police said the driver, Douglas Cody Gass, is still on the run.

The victim was Kobe Lee Burchfield, 19, of Chickamauga, Ga.

The pursuit began in Fort Oglethorpe just before 11 p.m. Officers tried to stop the vehicle due to reckless driving.

The driver later lost control and hit a power pole, then the vehicle burst into flames.

He got out and fled.

The victim was a 2018 graduate of Ridgeland High School. He worked at Logan’s Roadhouse.

His family said, "Kobe was a very intelligent person with a great personality and loved to laugh.  He was greatly loved by all he touched."

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge.  Burial will be in Kirk Memorial Gardens in Rainsville, Ala.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
