TDOT To Implement Traffic Shift On U.S. 27 South At 4th Street Tuesday Evening

Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will implement a traffic shift on U.S. 27 South in Chattanooga as part of the U.S. 27 widening project. The shift will be on Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending by 6 a.m. on Wednesday. 

The traffic shift will result in a new traffic pattern beginning Wednesday morning on U.S. 27 South that will significantly affect the 4 Street accessibility to and from U.S. 27 South.

During the traffic shift on Tuesday night, there will be temporary lane closures on U.S. 27 South in the area of the Olgiati Bridge and 4^th Street. Motorists are urged to avoid the area on Tuesday night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Those who must travel in this area should be alert and obey all signage as the traffic shift is implemented. 

After the traffic shift is completed on Wednesday morning, motorists wishing to access 4^th Street from U.S. 27 South will take a new ramp at the south end of the Olgiati Bridge and turn left onto 4^th Street to enter the downtown area. Motorists who normally use 4^th Street to access U.S. 27 South from the downtown area will be detoured to MLK Blvd. where they can access U.S. 27 South. The existing ramps to and from U.S. 27 South at 4^th Street will be closed to allow room for construction of a new bridge and a new section of U.S. 27 South. Motorists need to exercise caution when traveling through the construction zone and pay close attention to all posted signage.

This configuration will remain in place until future phases of construction are completed. Access to U.S. 27 North from 4^th Street will remain unchanged during this time.

This work is weather dependent. Should inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances delay the traffic shift, it will be rescheduled to take place at a later date.
