Buildings, Community Members Go Blue For Colon Cancer Awareness Month

  • Wednesday, March 11, 2020

If you’re downtown after dark this month, you may notice a certain hue to the Scenic City skyline as several buildings including Liberty Tower, Republic Centre, the Westin and The Block glow blue in honor of colon cancer awareness.

“We are so grateful for the business community’s continued support of this important observance,” said Dr. Shauna Lorenzo-Rivero, colorectal surgeon and chair of the Greater Chattanooga Colon Cancer Foundation. “Efforts like this help us raise awareness of colorectal cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers in our area and impacts many Chattanooga families.

“It’s vitally important that people recognize the signs and symptoms and get screened for the disease because if it’s caught early, colon cancer is treatable and beatable.”

Colon cancer awareness activities this month will wrap up with the Rump Run on Saturday, March 28 at Enterprise South Nature Park.

The 10th annual event is the signature fundraiser in support of GCCCF’s ongoing community outreach and education efforts, and welcomes area runners, walkers and colon cancer survivors for a morning of family-friendly physical activity including a road race, kids’ activities and a fun walk.

Online registration for the Rump Run is open until noon on Friday, March 27 at rumprun.com. In-person registration will be available the morning of the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Enterprise South Nature Park visitor center. A survivor recognition will take place at 8:50 a.m. followed by the timed 5K at 9 a.m. and the Fun Walk at 9:05 a.m. Pre-registration is $30 online, and the day-of registration fee will be $40. Children 10 and under are $10.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Greater Chattanooga Colon Cancer Foundation’s work to increase awareness of colorectal cancer, improve access to screenings and offer support to those impacted by the disease.

The Greater Chattanooga Rump Run is presented by Galen Medical Group and supported by founding sponsors CHI Memorial, Erlanger Health System, Parkridge Medical Group and University Surgical Associates. Additional sponsors include EPB, Benchmark Physical Therapy, Brewer Media Group, Chattanooga Endoscopy Center, Diagnostic Pathology Services, Digestive Care and Management, First Horizon, HHM Wealth Advisors, Myriad Labs, PathGroup and Service Electric Company.

Individuals or groups interested in volunteering at the Rump Run may call 423-757-0730 or go to www.rumprun.com to sign up.
