  • Saturday, October 23, 2021
The Covenant volleyball team dominated in both matches of their last home USA South tri-match on Senior Day, topping both Huntingdon and Agnes Scott in straight sets.

The Scots have now won four of their last five and sit at 11-2 in conference play and 17-8 overall.

Before the matches, Covenant recognized its senior class of Meriel Chupp, Riley Howe, Savannah Savage, and student assistant Olivia Sanders. The group has 51 wins and a USA South West Division regular season title during their careers.

MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Huntingdon 0

Though the Hawks put up a competitive fight, Covenant would use several scoring runs to ultimately prevail in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-22).

The first set saw lots of back and forth action, but a 5-1 scoring run would put the Scots up 17-13.
Though the seesaw action continued from there, Covenant was able to string together a couple points once again and gain the first set victory (25-19).

Huntingdon came out swinging in the second set, going up five on the Scots (8-13). But Covenant would then respond with a 14-1 run to go up 22-14 and ultimately take the set, 25-20.

The Scots used another run in the third set to put the Hawks away. Down by three (13-16), Covenant would go on a 6-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. From there, the Scots had all the momentum they needed to go on to win the match with a 25-22 third-set victory.

Emma Kalbfleisch led the Scots with nine kills and three aces. Senior Riley Howe tallied an ace, five kills, and 10 digs. Rachel Bartlett recorded a double-double with 12 assists and 19 digs.

The Hawks were led by Morgan Ilsley with nine kills, 13 assists, and 15 digs. Jordan Hollis added seven kills and eight blocks.

The loss sits Huntingdon at 7-5 in USA South play.

MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, Agnes Scott 0

A balanced attack that saw 10 different players record a kill led the Scots to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-18) win over Agnes Scott.

Howe led the way with seven kills and five digs, while Kayla Youell had five kills and Chupp added four. Chupp also had two blocks in the win and Grace Logterman had four total blocks (one solo, three assisted).

The Scots also never trailed in the third and had a 7-1 spurt that gave the hosts a 16-10 lead.
