Avondale Library Reopens Thursday

  • Wednesday, November 17, 2021

The Chattanooga Public Library is reopening its Avondale Library Branch Thursday at 10 a.m., as part of Mayor Tim Kelly’s phased reopening of the city’s community centers.

The Avondale Library is the newest branch of the Chattanooga Public Library system, opening in November 2019 along with the Avondale Community Center it is located within. As part of citywide COVID-19 precautions, the Avondale location closed to the public in March 2020, and it has remained closed until now.

“We are beyond excited to reopen this location,” said Corinne Hill, the Library’s executive director. “The community surrounding Avondale is important to us, and we’re so glad to serve them again.”

The Avondale branch will be open to the public during the community center’s operating hours, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. The library features 2,000 books for all age groups, daily newspapers and magazines, public computers, printing, notary service, classrooms, and Makerspace tools. Programs for babies, toddlers, and K-12 students are currently on-hold, but will resume in the future pending pandemic conditions.

Erica Richardson, head librarian at the Avondale Branch and new to the Library system, is ready to welcome everyone from the neighborhood back. “This is such a bright, inviting space and a valuable resource for the community,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting our new regulars and learning what we can do for them.”
