Arnold, James Douglas

Longtime Resident Of Orange Grove Loved Music

  • Tuesday, July 20, 2021

James Douglas Arnold passed away on July 19, 2021.

He was born in Montgomery, Al., on September 27, 1938.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Frieda and his sister Janice Arnold.  Survivors include his brother Hugh (Char) Arnold and many aunts, uncles, cousins and a very special friend, "nurse Sue". He was a resident of one of Orange Grove's retirement homes.

His parents were one of five families that responded to an ad in the Chattanooga Times in 1952 looking for parents who were interested in providing an educational program for children with special needs.  And, as they say, the rest is history.  Because of the tireless and exceptional effort by these families, Orange Grove became an outstanding institution that serves as an example both in this country and worldwide.  Doug and his sister were in the first class at Orange Grove and after attending school they both worked in the workshop.

Doug loved everyone he met and they loved him. He neither lied, cheated, stole, bullied, cursed nor said a bad word to or about anyone. He loved listening to music, picking his guitar, and riding on a motorcycle with his brother. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, any donation to Orange Grove is a blessing.

You can send a memorial contribution to 615 Derby St, Chattanooga Tn. 37404 or online at www.orangegrovecenter.org.
