Theatre Company Obvious Dad Kicks Off Second Season With Adventurous Love Story

  • Thursday, May 12, 2022

Obvious Dad will launch their second season of bold live theatre on May 20 with the local premiere of Rajiv Joseph’s “Gruesome Playground Injuries.” The show is the first of Obvious Dad’s three summer productions in 2022.

“Gruesome Playground Injuries” follows Kayleen and Doug, two lifelong friends whose tumultuous lives intertwine in unexpected ways following a chance meeting in the school nurse’s office. As their scars and memories accumulate with each passing year, they find that, sometimes, the most haunting relationships are the most fulfilling.

“We can’t throw away people or events simply because they didn’t fit us in a specific moment,” said Gaye Jeffers, director of the show. “I think the play reminds us that sometimes we need other people to tell us who we are.”

The cast includes Jonathan Harris and Grace Holtz. The artistic team includes Blake Harris (artistic director and scenic designer), Alex Miller-Long (technical director and lighting designer), Dyna DeMerritt (costume designer), Jackie Box (sound designer), Jessie Wright (properties designer), and Helia Quhite (stage manager). “Gruesome Playground Injuries” will be performed at the UTC Fine Arts Center at 752 Vine St. on May 20-22, 27-29, and June 3-5. Fridays and Saturdays start at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays start at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets and season passes are available now at obviousdad.com.

"Our goal is to bring an exciting, new and progressive type of theatre to Chattanooga,” said Mr. Harris, artistic director and co-founder of Obvious Dad. “Our second season includes three shows that explore a wide variety of relevant topics in unique and stimulating ways.”
