UTC Defender Shaw Named To SoCon Preseason Soccer Team

Mocs Picked To Finish Fifth

  • Thursday, August 11, 2022

Chattanooga women’s soccer defender Maggie Shaw was named to the Southern Conference Coaches Preseason All-Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday and the Mocs were picked to finish fifth.

Shaw is a two-time all-conference performer and was the 2020 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year when she helped the Mocs to their best finish in school history at third in the rankings. Last season, the Columbia, S.C., senior, helped the Mocs defense to seven shutouts.

Samford placed four on the preseason team while Furman and Mercer had two selections each. UTC, The Citadel and ETSU had the remaining three.

The Mocs were picked to finish fifth by the SoCon coaches, just one point behind fourth-placed Western Carolina. Samford picked up nine first place votes to finish the top in the rankings with 81 points. Furman received the remaining top vote and was selected to finish second ahead of Mercer by one point.

UNC Greensboro was picked to finish sixth followed by East Tennessee State, The Citadel, Wofford and VMI.

The season kicks off for Chattanooga on the road Thursday, August 18 at UAB. The home opener will be three days later on Sunday, August 21 against Eastern Kentucky. All home matches are played at the UTC Sports Complex and admission is FREE unless otherwise indicated.
