The John Sevier Chapter, Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution announces the winners of the school year 2023-2024 Elementary School Poster Contest. The winners in order were: first place, Miss Lee Ann Boyer, Griffith Elementary; second place, Miss Sasha Eichner, Griffith Elementary; and third place, Miss Parker Somerville, Griffith Elementary. The chapter awarded the following prizes: first place, a check for $100; second place, a check for $50; and third place, a check for $25. Students tied for fourth place each received a check for $10.
All the students in the chapter’s final round also received a Boston Tea Party 250th Anniversary pin.

The SAR’s elementary school poster contest is open to all third, fourth and fifth grade students interested in the American Revolution. The contest is open to public and private schools, parochial, home schooled, Scouting, or Children of the American Revolution member students in that same grade range. Young artists with an enthusiasm toward art and a love of American history were able to submit their posters to their local SAR chapters for the competition. The John Sevier Chapter, TNSSAR sponsors students living in Bledsoe, Hamilton, Marion and Sequatchie Counties. This year, 135 students from the Griffith Elementary School in Sequatchie County participated in the contest, which had the theme a Revolutionary War Event. Each student received a participation certificate. The six fourth grade teachers selected the top three posters from each of their classes to be judged by the chapter prior to the Christmas break. The Chapter selected ten posters to receive a cash prize. The chapter’s winning posters will move on to the Regional SAR level competition to compete against posters from Southeastern Tennessee.

The SAR’s Poster Contest will begin again at the start of the 2024-2025 School Year, with the theme of a person or persons of the Revolution. Students, parents and/or teachers interested in participating in the poster contest can contact the John Sevier Chapter by email at johnsevierchapter@tnssar.org.
