The historic St. Elmo Fire Hall will host a pop-up event featuring a book sale that benefits the Downtown Public Library and live music from The New Quintet and Dalton Mills. It will be held Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and live music will start at 8 p.m.
There is a $15 cover charge that goes to the musicians. The historic St Elmo Fire Hall is at 4501 St. Elmo Ave.
The event is the brainchild of Linden Marno-Ferree, a bartender and book-lover whose dreams of opening a combination bar/bookstore brought her to Chattanooga. The St. Elmo Fire Hall has hosted her previous pop-up events, which double as fundraisers for the library by selling their supply of donated and discarded books.
This month’s event will be a collaboration with Quiet City, a pop-up concert series that brings live music to unexpected corners of Chattanooga.
“In the past we’ve programmed concerts in really unique spaces like a donut shop, a plant shop, and a restored 50’s barbershop,” said event organizer Cody Ray. “This show will be a great one because the St. Elmo Fire Hall is such a special place.”
The St. Elmo Fire Hall was built in 1934. It housed a 1,000 gallon fire truck and served as the office for the fire department. The fire hall was closed in the 80s and after an uncertain future, this architectural gem was saved thanks to a private/public partnership between the city of Chattanooga and a local citizen.
The event will feature live music from two of Chattanooga’s best acts. The New Quintet blends elements of traditional American music like folk, ragtime, and early country – and best of all, they’ve got a clarinet. Dalton Mills, fresh off a European tour with Abe Partridge, has some new great songs to perform – including a real tear-jerker about the passing of an old farm dog.
