  • Friday, March 1, 2024
The Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis team earned a convincing 7-0 shutout win over in-state foe Austin Peay during non-conference action inside the Strang-Voges Tennis Center at the McCallie School on Friday morning.

Following the win, Chattanooga has now won three of its last four and improves to 6-7 on the season. Austin Peay falls to an even 4-4 following the defeat.

Chattanooga opened the match with a 1-0 lead after doubles play with the No. 2 duo of Cortland Grove and Jordan McClure clinching the team’s point with a 7-6 tie-breaking victory.
The No. 1 pairing of Peyton Gatti and Jakub Jupa kicked off the match with a 6-4 win to accompany the win at No. 2.

It was all UTC in singles action as Gatti started things with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 before Kristof Kincses capped off a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 to give the hosts a 3-0 lead in the match. Grove provided the match-clinching moment with a comeback victory (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) in the No. 4 slot to give the Mocs its third win in the last four matches.

Ryan Mudre accounted for the team’s fifth point with a gritty 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 tiebreaking win at No. 3 ahead a 7-5, 6-4 decision from Jupa at No. 2 singles for the sixth point. Gabriel Castillo preserved the team’s shutout with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 rally victory at No. 1 to capture his fourth singles win in his last five tries.

Chattanooga (6-7) quickly returns to action with a Sunday non-conference road contest against a red-hot Gardner-Webb squad in Boiling Springs, N.C. Match coverage links, if available, will be located on the schedule page at GoMocs.com.
